Neighbourhoods and the Community Survey

Seven Zones

The City is running a Community Survey (which I hope you all will take.) And I was wondering what people think of these seven ‘Zones’. Do you think this accurately reflects the various neighbourhoods of Des Moines? If not, what changes would you make?

Nine Neighbourhoods?

For some context: In the past, some of my colleagues referred to ‘nine neighbourhoods’ in Des Moines. I believe this originates from a planning map from years ago. But somehow that became the standard. It’s how our Citizens Advisory Committee was set up, as well as our recent Housing Action Plan (another survey you should fill out. 🙂 )

Of course, there’s a print version

And here’s a page from the PDF Print Version I received today. Print it, fill it out and mail back using this thing called an ‘envelope’ and a ‘stamp’. 🙂 In this one you circle your neighbourhood(s).

But wait, there’s more!

Of course, all this stuff is arbitrary. In truth, the majority of Des Moines is the result of twenty three annexations cobbled together over the decades. I don’t know how exactly to break this down, or even why it matters all that much. But I am curious to know how you perceive your ‘neighbourhood’. After all, we can’t really serve your neighbourhood unless we have a clear idea of what it means to you, right? 🙂
