Original King County Plat Map for The Town of Des Moines

Just some rando history, I’ve been meaning to throw up. (That didn’t come out right. 😀 ) The original plat map from 1889. Note that we’re still in the Washington Territory.

The only street name left is ‘Cliff Avenue’. But what we now call 225, 223, 222, 220, etc. were Cherry, Vashon, Maple, Spruce and so on. I kinda wish we’d kept them. 🙂

The City Council runs across these occasionally when one is dealing with ‘land’ leases. King County still references those original street names in legal documents. The language is as flowery as the calligraphy. Eg. if you want to denote a particular spot you might indicate a point “looking hence 400 feet and 3 degrees north of Vashon Street.”

Same thing in Redondo, btw. All the street names on the original plat are US Presidents.
