Jimi Hendrix Memorial

Greenwood Memorial Park 350 Monroe Avenue NE Renton

I try to post things that are Des Moines-y. But I was over in Renton last week at the Emergency Operations Center for the EMAC committee I serve on.

And the EOC is down the road from this. I forget that, you know, people have moved here recently and that maybe people might be interested in the Jimi Hendrix Memorial.

For a long time, I didn’t know how I felt about it. The majority of the place is very ordered, low-slung, modest, mostly reds and brick orange, sedate–most sections devoted to various Asian communities in traditional cultural presentations.

Within that context, it really makes a statement. 😃 (It’s a lotta purple.)

But it’s grown on me. I think it fits. Or at least, I have -no- idea how to capture his spirit and influence. It’s definitely better than most music genius memorials I’ve visited.

For guitarists of my era, Hendrix was not a god, he was god, if it’s not blasphemous to say. There are certain people who flip the script in their field so completely, it’s hard to imagine the world before they came along.

If that sounds odd, for one thing, there’s no ‘turn it up to eleven’ joke without Hendrix plugging a Stratocaster into a Marshall stack 60 years ago.

Anyhoo, if you’re a fan of guitar, rawk, area history, etc. It’s open to the public every day. https://www.jimihendrixmemorial.com/visit.html
