I was in Olympia this week in support of two important airport bills sponsored by Senator Tina Orwall. I mentioned to our lobbyist how beautiful the area is. In my previous life I visited a bunch of similar state capitols and let me tell you, many are well, not exactly Architectural Digest material. π
But these buildings definitely are. You really feel ‘history’ and a sense that this is how government should work. It’s a bit odd to me considering how sketchy our support for so many historic buildings has been in the area (sigh).
The actual area where government business is conducted is very small–basically just four buildings. But along the grounds there are dozens of statues and pieces of public art you can easily miss. But pretty much all of them are extremely well done.
For example, I’ve seen a -lot- of MLK sculptures, busts, etc. mostly in big cities back east. IMHO this one, tucked into one of the windowed alcoves where big ceremonial events are conducted, is a standout.
