TACOMA, Wash. — A new proposal aims to launch a fast ferry service between Tacoma and Seattle in time for next year’s World Cup.

Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello, a longtime advocate for the ferry service, wants to bring fully electric vessels to Pierce County.

In preparation for an estimated 750,000 visitors flooding into the region for the largest sporting event in the world, “They’re not just coming for the World Cup, they’re coming to see this place and experience this place,” said Mello.

“What better way to move around this beautiful part of the world than on the water?” Mello added.

The vessel Pierce County is looking at is the Artemis 29, which seats 29 passengers with space for luggage and bikes.

Between two vessels, there would be eight round-trips daily, with potential docking locations at Thea Foss Waterway and Ruston Way.

Depending on the docking site, the ferry ride could take between 45 minutes to an hour.

The one-year pilot program is estimated to cost $4 million, with half of the funding already secured from local tourism dollars. “The work in front of us over the next couple of months is to raise the additional two million dollars,” said Mello, who pitched the idea to the Port of Tacoma Commission and inviting them to become founding sponsors.

Residents have already expressed support for the initiative. “I will do anything to not drive on I-5,” said Vicky, a supporter of the fast ferry. Mary Eversole added, “I think it’s fantastic. Any alternative transportation to cars, especially using the waterways.”

While the vision for the fast ferry service is clear, it remains uncertain whether it will become a reality in time for the World Cup.
